| Duct Sealing & Leak Testing
We have the equipment and PG&E certified training to properly test your entire duct system for leakage. Duct leakage can account for up to 30% of lost heating and cooling cost.
The procedure to perform a duct test is as follows:
- We seal off all of the heating and cooling vents and pressurize the system with a fan by blowing air into the return air. While the system is pressurized we then measure the amount of air being lost using a special meter which gives an exact measurement of air being lost through leaking ducts and connections.
- To locate these leaks we use a fog machine to blow fog into the duct system. This makes it easy to locate the accessible in the crawl space and attic.
- With the leaks located we seal them using mastic, butel tape and screws. NO more duct tape.
- We again pressurize the duct system to find out the final leakage.
What is pass or fail?
Local Building Codes say in a home with existing duct systems up to 15% leakage is passing. On a newly installed duct system maximum leakage is 6%.
In some cases with existing systems where duct leaks are not accessible like between first and second story floors or in enclosed building chases it may not be possible to achieve 15%.
